Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate--history, effects and future Chicken Little: Auto Industry meets the future Hybrids: What and how, and why they are still tied to gas! Fuel Cells: Cut through the hype to the facts Global Warming: Called Myth by the Oil Industry, a chance we cannot afford Exhaust: EVs total emissions really 97% less than Gasoline Cars SIGN UP to give your EV Testimonial Look at latest survey survey/testimonal file Links to EV resources on the WWWeb Electric cars have always been fascinating. The idea of soaring power, feeling like an airplane's effortless takeoff, with maximum power from a standing start, has only been limited by the difficulty of carrying along enough electric energy to drive a long distance. But most gas is burned on short trips, less than 40 miles per day. Electric locomotives have become the standard, because a big motor gives a degree of control not possible otherwise. Diesel-Electric locomotives get their electric from energy-dense diesel, and all-electric locomotives, buses and trollies use transmission lines to power the Electric traction motor. Electric earthmoving machinery in this format has become standard for the same reasons. Big Oil and their captive auto industry depend on Internal Combusion ("IC") for their profits, and have fought production and sale of Electric cars. With the poisonous dependence on overseas oil imports bankrupting our treasury and poisoning our kids lungs, the move to plug-in oil-free cars is a matter of survival. A VISION FOR AMERICA 1. A national transportation plan, emphasizing double-tracked electric trains. Minimizing transit, and maximizing efficiency. There's a sensible radius in which truck transit makes sense; most long-distance transit of containers, people and mixed cargo should be done by rail. De-emphasize air travel, it is expensive and over-polluting in the worst place, the upper atmosphere. Develop innovative ways, such as superior urban design, to avoid unnecessary daily commutes. 2. Local transit via electric cars, 100 miles of all-electric range plus a small gas generator for occasional trips longer than 100 miles per day. The batteries exist now, are well-proven and standard lead-acid or Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) proven to yield more than 100 miles range on a charge for years of operation. An EV travels up to 6 mile on each kilo-Watt-hour (kWh) of energy; to go 1000 miles per month takes about 200 kWh, about one-fifth of the average home's electric usage. 3. Solar rooftop systems on every roof in America. Each person, on average, has 1000 square feet of roof area, enough for 100 square meters of solar system. After allowance for shade, roof configuration, etc., this enables a solar system of at least 20 square meters per person, or 2 kilo-Watts to 4 kilo-Watts per person -- more than enough to power 100 miles of Electric car driving per day. This solves the daytime peak power problem, and simultaneously helps cool the homes under the roofs. This "EV-PV" is no fantasy, it's reality for those driving Electric cars, using the money saved from gas to pay for their rooftop solar systems. 4. Wind and tidal power for off-peak production of electric, and use of hydro to store excess daytime solar production by storing water (as is done at Lake Castaic and other reservoirs). 5. New industries producing world-class quantities of solar panels and efficient autos. EVs and solar power were invented in America, we should be the experts and the world producer. New rail and high-technology information industries must replace oil wells, oil refineries, oil wars, oil presidents and oil politicians, and lessen oil runoff, oil fires, oil refinery pollution, auto and other emissions. To force politicians to move in this direction, unified grass-roots power is needed. Big Oil has all the money and power, now, but the people can withdraw it from Big Oil at any time they flex their will and exert their power. To help this campaign, join TAXPAYERS AGAINST BIG OIL an ad-hoc umbrella group, dedicated to reducing the power of Big Oil and its stranglehold on America. Don't be passive, join up! Each member helps increase our clout. Prove we have paying members and that people want Big Oil to be reined in, oil subsidies eliminated, a tax on oil pollution, clean Electric cars such as the ones we drive every day, and a rational plan for building an EV and solar power industrial base. To join as a fully-paid-up lifetime member, send one dollar via US Mail to Taxpayers Against Big Oil, c/o Doug Korthof, 1020 Mar Vista, Seal Beach 90740-5842. You will eventually receive a bumper sticker "TaxpayersAgainstBigOil.com" in acknowledgement. EV-PV can replace oil, natural gas, nuclear energy in America GM joins oil company fight against this vision "GM: The battery is dead "Automaker phases out its electric vehicles amid lack of interest, easing of emission rules "...As California retreats from its strict pollution regulation, GM is taking the cars off the road...scrapping them...Over the past decade, state regulators have caved to pressure as car makers vigorously fought at hearings and in court to halt the regulation. Major automakers have stopped production...The California Air Resources Board is poised to make changes that reflect that the cars are a commercial failure and to promote more promising technologies that have emerged...a combination of low-polluting gas-powered vehicles, gas-electric hybrids, and a couple of hundred fuel-cell cars down the road...The fuel cell cars have already doubled the range of electric cars...". (AP, Brian Melley, printed in the Orange County Register Wed, Apr. 9, 2003) Who killed the EV: former ARB Chairman Alan Lloyd and 7 other members of the Air Resources Board. GM, Ford, Fuel Cell interests and the Western States Petroleum industry group put pressure on CARB and ex-Gov. Gray Davis. Toyota had been forbidden to join the American Automobile Manufacturers' Association (AAMA) prior to 1999. In that year, it disbanded and reconstituted itself as the Auto Manufacturers' Alliance. Toyota was allowed to join and, perhaps in repayment for this "honor", Toyota killed its EV program also. Now, 5 years later, fuel cells cars are increasingly recognized as unrealistic, a hoax. Curiously, when asked where they would get the hydrogen, it all seems to come from "renewable sources". But when charging EVs, fuel cell folks argue that it all comes from burning coal. Auto makers came to CARB in 2006 asking for relief from the "burden" of building Zero Emission clean cars. In the fall of 2006, a so-called "expert panel" agreed that their 2003 fuel cell promises were unattainable. The panel exhibited a charmingly inexpert and unscientific faith in fuel cells, but recommended a 5- or 10-year further delay in even modest production goals. And of course, no fuel cell car will ever be sold, they are all on 3-year lease and require constant servicing. In May, 2007, ex-Director Witherspoon and former Chair Sawyer refused to bow to auto and oil company demands, apparently incurring the wrath of corrupt Governor Schwarzenegger. Later they were fired, under questionable pretexts, by the supposedly "environmentally friendly" Schwarzenegger. The 2003 CARB cave-in to Big Oil allowed them to supposedly do fuel cell research instead of building Electric cars; they were to begin either fuel cell production, or renew Electric car production, by 2012, and really ramp-up in 2015. Thus, Electric car drivers were handed the idea that once fuel cells were proven impossible, they would return to building cheap, clean Electric cars. But now, when fuel cells failed, CARB is just letting them out of BOTH promises, no fuel cells and no Electric cars either. On Mar. 27, 2008, CARB bowed to GM and Big Oil, killing the requirement for even modest production of Zero Emission Vehicles at least through 2015. CARB voted unanimously to kill the Electric car a second time. The enemies of Clean Air are now led by CARB Board Member Dan Sperling, who proposed dismantling the ZEV mandate and making it only "technology forcing" for fuel cell research. The lungs of kids are being blasted by refinery emission of HxCx, by auto emission of NOx (anhydrous nitrous and nitric acid) and by diesel emission of SOx (anhydrous sulfurous and sulfuric acid). Our wealth is being drained away by foreign oil dictators. Our supposed leaders, such as CARB and Schwarzenegger, are AWOL, not to be found, no help. CARB is content to monitor lung damage to kids from refineries, but not do anything about it. 2007 U.S.C. study shows that living near freeways stunts the growth of children's lungs, permanently reducing lung capacity and inducing asthma and other lung diseases. Auto pollution has also been linked to other ailments including heart disease. This is said to affect urban design; but it shows there is no way to live in close proximity to the auto exhaust and refinery pollution. It's not the freeways that kills kids lungs, it's the AUTO EXHAUST. "...local exposure to freeways and regional air pollution had detrimental, and independent, effects on lung-function growth. Pronounced deficits in attained lung function at age 18 years were recorded for those living within 500 m of a freeway..." U.S.C. study published in the NIH Lancet 2006: NSC says Auto emissions the dirtiest thing we do 2004: Smoggy air and damaged lungs in kids correlated One of these clean cars was destroyed, one is still running. Toyota sold the RAV4-EV, on the right, to the public, while GM took back and destroyed perfectly fine EV1 cars. If not for GM, both these oil-free cars would still be running. Unused Electric grid capacity, if used to charge plug-capable cars, is more than sufficient to eliminate overseas oil imports. Only if the people are vigilant against e oil industry bribes. The Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) program was originally intended to put a large fleet of ZEV cars on the road. In 1996, it was undermined and weakened to little more than a demonstration program. CARB proved that Electric cars are possible, and forced auto makers to reluctantly make a few ZEV. Oil Dependence Anemia: Only the Zero Emission Vehicle ("ZEV") mandate is capable of enforcing clean air standards, reducing dependence on oil, and promoting serial-hybrid Electric cars. Dirty air affects not only our own and our children's health in asthma and other lung diseases, but pollutants from refineries, oil spills, and car and diesel exhaust come down from the air on roads, concrete and buildings, and get washed into the streams and into the Ocean as a big component of so-called "Urban Runoff".
